Welcome to The Cornish Eclectic, a space for bold, low-fi artwork inspired by 90’s cartoons, Low Brow art and a love of playful visual storytelling

Who is The Cornish Eclectic?

The Cornish Eclectic is the work of Steve, a Cornwall-based artist whose practice centres on acrylic and ink paintings rooted in Low Brow and cartoon-influenced visual language. His work features imagined creatures, monsters, and characters, rendered in a bold, graphic style that balances humour with restraint.

After rediscovering drawing later in life, Steve developed a daily practice that embraces simplicity, immediacy and play. His paintings prioritise strong line, limited colour palettes and a deliberately low-fi aesthetic, allowing imperfection and humour to remain integral rather than incidental.

Positioned between contemporary cartoon art and pop-surrealism, the work resists over-polish in favour of clarity, character and visual impact. While often light-hearted, the imagery reflects a sustained interest in storytelling, outsider art traditions and the value of drawing as an instinctive, joyful act.

Alongside personal work, Steve is available for commissions including illustration, character development and packaging design. Viewers are invited to explore the work and engage with its playful, graphic sensibility.
